Full Restoration - Victor Victrola Record Player from 1917
It's always fun when a machine I restore is from a friend or family member. This broken down record player from the early times of record players was my sister-in-law's grandfather's, purchased new in 1917 for $15 plus $4 more for records and needles.
It has sat unused for over 50 years. Someone couldn't get the handle out by reversing its direction, so they opened it up and removed a main gear instead. Then put all the parts back inside and left it.
At first glance, I thought it would be too difficult to restore - it looked half complete and not very special. But as you will see in the video, all of the parts are there. The only unuseable piece was the thick rubber gasket that attaches the playing arm to the reproducer (sound head).
Probably my biggest amazement was the availability of quality reproduction parts and supplies, such as that gasket, and needles by the hundred. Why by the hundreds? Who needs hundreds of needles? It turns out, the needles are just plain steel points that are meant to be discarded after one play (of one side of a record). Fortunately, they were about 3 cents each.
I like this model because although it was the cheapest in the Victor lineup, its sound is channeled through a cast iron passage and out the front, making it much more compact and portable.
A couple of other pleasant surprises showed up along the way that made it a pretty attractive little machine. Please enjoy watching the journey on what was one of my most satisfying restorations.

Fire Truck Pedal Car Restoration
Переглядів 17 тис.5 місяців тому
This children’s pedal car was made in the 1960’s. It was made by Murray and was called a flat face Fire Truck. The body shape was modeled after the Ford Fairlane (my first car handed down by Grandma). It’s missing its wooden ladders, the ignition key, the hood light, and padded seat. This car has had some good usage and now it’s time to bring it back to its original condition, for a new generat...
Restoration of rusty old scale - finding hidden delights

This small balance scale is from around 1930. It has rusty trays, oxidized metal, and 3 coats of flaking paint. Join me in its restoration to shiny, beautiful, and like-new condition. Along the way, I discover 4 pleasant surprises that make this scale even more interesting and, once restored, more complete. You can watch sand-blasting, metal plating, clear coating, pinstriping, creation of part...

Restoration: Rusty Giant Advertising Flask and Clock - Old Mr. Boston
Переглядів 225 тис.2 роки тому
Towering at almost two feet tall, this hunk of rusty metal began life as an advertising display and clock, shown off in bars and liquor stores in the years following the repeal of American Prohibition laws. Heavily rusted inside and out, with a clock that was also rusted to a standstill and suffering from a broken mainspring, old Mr. Boston had probably given up all hope of ticking with life ag...
Restoring the oldest type of sound recorder & player in history AND making new records
Переглядів 73 тис.2 роки тому
In this video, I show how I refurbished an original sound recording and reproducing machine from over 100 years ago - an Edison Home Phonograph. I then go on to attempt to make recordings in a way that duplicates the very first technology used to do so, using a wax cylinder and a live performer. This rugged machine, 109 years old, now performs as well as it did when it was first made. Watch me ...
A 1940's Mills Vest Pocket Slot Machine restoration - how it works and some history
Переглядів 76 тис.2 роки тому
My latest project is a light restoration and repair of a Mills Novelty Co. Vest Pocket slot machine. Manufactured between 1938 - 1952, this is a full and complete slot machine that takes in nickels and pays out up to twenty of them for a jackpot. The “Plus” designation on the machine means that the owner of it may also offer an additional jackpot bonus, paid separately. The name "vest pocket" i...

Antique Photos Refreshed - Outdoors Edition (from glass negatives)
Переглядів 4 тис.3 роки тому
I have an extensive collection of antique photos - some as old as 1861. Here I show a dozen of them after retouching, adding some motion (including the parallax effect), colorized here and there, and some captions in the CC track. These are all from glass plate negatives and are well-preserved. All but one depicts an outdoor scene, and the years range from around 1900 to 1928. If you style your...

A subsequent owner of this machine was Como P...
1911 Timeclock - Still Works Great! International Time Recording Co., Later Bought by IBM
Переглядів 10 тис.4 роки тому
Watch as I "unbag" an International Time Recording Co. time clock from 1911. The clock works well, using a pendulum and two mainsprings for power. This was likely a factory clock for use by workers at the beginnings and ends of their shifts. "Punch the clock", "punch in and punch out" are terms that got their origin from machines like this one - watch the video to see why. This time clock is ab...

This is not a record Player. This is a Gramaphone. It works by winding a wide spring placed in side a round box. I had two long time ago but gave it a before a few years.

A large prickly pear cactus spine makes the best needle. It's softer than the 78 rpm records strong but flexible. On these phonographs the steel needles need to be replaced ideally every 1 to 3 plays. The 78s were made from shellac and clay and are harder than the steel needles so the needle tip grinds down and can damage the record grooves. Inside the case would be a little metal cup to store the extra needles.

Great restoration! My first job was in a golf pro shop at a country club when I was 14 and the boss there had a national cash register similar to this but without the hand crank. His was a little bigger and was the type you wind up like a clock. To complete the transaction and print the receipt, you’d push a button and the machine would spring into action. He often had to spend hundreds of dollars to get the thing fixed for various reasons, but the worst was when one of the staff accidentally pushed two adjacent number keys at the same time, causing it to jam. I still remember the funky rhythm that machine made.

Alot of the times that it is hard to wind or the return speed is slow is the old oil used to coat the gears and spring its an old whale oil based lubricant and prone to degradation and becoming sticky over time a good alcohol scrub and a new machine oil will solve most simple lubricant based issues on old machines like these or sewing machines

There is a really cool electric amplifier that was available for these. But, it doesn't run on electricity, it runs on air. You put on the reproducer which has an air line running off to the pump. There are air powered victrolas as well. Victor produced a model for outdoor use which had the equivalent of a 100 watt amplifier with air. They are incredibly effective. There are several demonstrations on youtube. watch?v=J7SV65DFNy8&

That 15 Dollar price is officially 401 Dollars today. But there is whole lot of BS in the long term inflation numbers. Using Gold as the benchmark, it's more like 1500 using today's money.

I had a predecessor of this NCR unit, back in the early 70's. It had 4 cash drawers and was a pinchbar model. I sold it at auction in 1978 for $650.⁰⁰ at Hovmand Galleries in Winnipeg. The original dry goods store that used the cash register was G&E Cash Store in Lundar, MB

Can I ask a few questions about your register? I just bought a similar one. 1923 model 852-E. Where can I get the receipt paper and do you know the specs on the milkglass part? That's missing. It seems like it only has a single hole in the center of the milkglass, not like many registers that has two holes for mounting. Thanks so much and thanks for the great videos. You taught me a lot about my register.

Nah. There is pure nostalgia. Early phonographs were severely limited in frequency response. They sounded roughly similar, maybe slightly worse than AM radio. The frequency response was less than 5khz. The real breakthrough came in 1927 or 28 with the invention of electric recording and then a couple years later with the Orthophonic mechanical reproducer which had a frequency response up to 10khz. Then right around the same time came electric reproducers.

The "Chrome" plating is NOT Chrome. - Chrome plating was not invented till the 1920's or 30's. That is NICKEL Plated. In truth - "Chrome" plating is actually nickel plated FIRST, then the chrome is applied OVER the nickel to protect the nickel. Personally, I think the bare Nickel has a beautiful warmth that chrome takes away. Any good chrome shop can do it. Nice restoration - glad you didn't overdo it like so many do!

Just want to point out that when that was made a dark paste filler was rubbed into the open grain and lightly sanded off to produce a flat surface and enhance the grain before an actual oil varnish was used. No filler and poly is the standard of modern crappy finishes on antiques made of oak.

I’m sure you’ve seen comments already that you shouldn’t use polyurethane on these machines, rather, you should use a shellac. Yes, bees wax is the correct material to seal the gasket. There are also rebuild kits available for these reproducers too. Be careful with the bearings that are in the tips of the governor as they are easy to lose, and hard to replace if lost!
